JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Citing the widespread damage from Hurricane Helene, the Georgia High School Association on Tuesday pushed back the start of the football playoffs by a week.

The final week of the regular season was moved from Nov. 1 to Nov. 8 with the announcement. That Nov. 8 date now becomes the final Friday of the regular season and can be used as a makeup date for schools that were affected by Helene. The opening round of the playoffs is now scheduled for Nov. 15-16 to accommodate the storm changes. Schools who were able to squeeze in their games ahead of Helene will now have a bye on Nov. 8.

In the News4JAX coverage region, Charlton County was able to move its game against Lanier County to Sept. 25 to avoid the storm. Brunswick and Glynn Academy moved their game to Sept. 30.

Ware County had its game against Benedictine scrubbed and hasn’t announced a makeup date. Pierce County didn’t play, although it is expected to hold its first game since the storm Friday against Cook. Camden County’s game against Valdosta is now Saturday at 1 p.m.
