Evacuation encouraged in select Nassau County zones as storm surge predictions increase

Hurricane Milton has battered and left Florida, but the remnants are still going to be an issue throughout the day as higher tides come in.

Nassau County Emergency Management reinforced its evacuation order on Thursday morning. At 9:21 a.m., the National Weather Service updated its forecast and the new totals are suggest that select Nassau County areas will be further impacted by increased storm surge.

The new forecast calls for a storm surge around 5 feet, 1 inch. That’s an increase from 3 feet, 7 inches, a significant jump for areas that have been soaked by heavy rains. That storm surge is expected to peak at high tide at 2:46 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

“The projected storm surge may cause water intrusion into homes during high tide” Nassau Emergency Management said.

Those who need a place to shelter can go to Wildlight Elementary, 550 Curiosity Ave, Yulee, 32097 will accept the general population, special needs residents, and pets with Rabies vaccinations. For information, call 904-548-0900.

  • Zone A: Egan’s Creek area, Crane Island (all areas), Long Point (all areas), 6th Street and Calhoun Street area, and River Crossing Way (north of Bonnieview Road)

  • Zone D: Piney Island (all areas), Marsh Lakes (all areas), Holly Point (all areas), Brady Point (all areas), Oyster Bay area, and River Marsh Bend (all areas)
