Irish super-featherweight boxer John Cooney has died of a mind damage per week after being stopped in his first Celtic title protection in opposition to Welshman Nathan Howells, his promoter stated on Saturday.
“It’s with full devastation that we’ve to announce that after per week of battling for his life John Cooney has sadly handed away,” Mark Dunlop of MHD Promotions stated on social media.
The 28-year-old had been in hospital in Belfast after surgical procedure.
He had left the ring on a stretcher after final Saturday’s struggle on the metropolis’s Ulster Corridor was stopped within the ninth spherical.
“Such a tragedy to lose this high quality younger boxer,” stated former featherweight world champion Barry McGuigan.
