Jackson back at No. 1 spot, Oakleaf moves in to start ‘25

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The News4JAX Varsity 4 Super 6 boys high school basketball rankings will be published each Wednesday — except during the weeks of Thanksgiving and Christmas — through the regular season. Records are through Dec. 31.

1. (2) Jackson (13-1, Class 3A)

Quality wins: Bolles, Creekside, Fleming Island, Impact Christian, Gainesville, Lake Highland Prep, Ribault, Tocoi Creek, University Christian.

Notable: The Tigers answered emphatically over the holiday break that they are the area’s best team. They had a one-point loss to Fleming Island in the Fortegra title game but got another shot at the Golden Eagles and walloped them (71-43). Bigger wins followed, including a high, high quality W over Lake Highland Prep (44-41) and then a 65-52 win over Ribault to win the Northwest Christmas tournament. Jahari Simmons (15.2 ppg) and David Wilson (13.1 ppg) are leading the Tigers.

2. (3) Impact Christian (8-4, Class 1A)

Quality wins: Creekside, Episcopal, Oviedo, Ponte Vedra, Mt. Bethel Christian, Potter’s House, San Jose Prep, Santa Fe Catholic.

Notable: Quality tournament stretch for the Lions, who dropped games to Baldwin, Ga. (68-58) and Villages Charter (80-62). They had a handful of solid Ws over the break, including Oviedo (53-47) and Santa Fe Catholic (57-55). Ronald Clark (16.3 ppg) and Jeremiah Jones (13.8 ppg) are leading the Lions.

3. (4) Tocoi Creek (11-1, Class 6A)

Quality wins: Beachside, Bishop Kenny, Fleming Island, Raines, Riverside.

Notable: Just one game since our last Super 6, a 65-42 win over Sandalwood. They’re back in action this week at the New Smyrna Beach Shootout. The Toros’ lone loss is a 52-44 game to No. 1 Jackson.

4. (5) Providence (11-3, Class 2A)

Quality wins: Bolles, Eagle’s View, Fernandina Beach, IMG Academy Blue, Ponte Vedra.

Notable: The Stallions went 4-0 since our last update, with solid, not spectacular competition (wins over IMG Academy Blue, Matanzas, Cuyahoga Valley Christian, Ohio, and Palm Bay. They’ve got Nease and Creekside up later this week. Ryan Gornto is leading the Stallions at 12.8 ppg followed by William Stewart (12.2 ppg) and Colton Nuualiitia (11.8 ppg).

5. (NR) Ponte Vedra (9-3, Class 5A)

Quality wins: Bartram Trail, Fleming Island, South Dade, University Christian.

Notable: The Sharks are back in the Super 6 mix, going 2-1 since our last update. The loss was close, 58-52, to an always-good Lake Highland Prep. They beat South Dade (47-40) and previous No. 1 Fleming Island (66-59). They’re back in action this week at the Matanzas tournament. David Sanchez Barrera (13 ppg) and Maddox Palmer (12.3 ppg) lead Ponte Vedra. Their two local losses are to Providence and Impact Christian.

T6. (1) Fleming Island (9-3, Class 5A)

Quality wins: Bradford, Creekside, Davenport, Jackson, Orange Park, Riverside.

Notable: The Golden Eagles fall a bit this week after a 1-2 stretch during the holiday break. They lost to Jackson big (71-43) and Ponte Vedra (66-59). They beat a quality Davenport (85-64). They are the only area team to have beaten No. 1 Jackson. Sophomore wing Carson Crawford has been elite (20.3 ppg, 9.9 rpg).

T6. (NR) Oakleaf (10-3, Class 6A)

Quality wins: Columbia (twice), McKeel Academy, NFEI, St. Augustine, Trenton, Vero Beach.

Notable: The Knights break into the Super 6 after a solid holiday period. Their only loss was to an excellent Jordan Christian Prep (77-58). The schedule hasn’t been exceptionally challenging thus far but things pick up this month.
