JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – What a difference a day can make. Wow.
I wrote one of these on Wednesday, and about 20 minutes later, Trent Baalke was fired. Coincidence? I think not.
Now, less than 24 hours without Baalke and the Jaguars are running like an NFL team. Who would have seen that coming?
Everyone. We all saw it coming like a slow-moving train. Like a tortoise trying to play fetch. This isn’t a surprise at all.
This was a far more difficult process than it needed to be, but they got to where they needed to get eventually. And that is all that matters, right? Either way, landing Liam Coen is huge. I mean, they did it in the most Jaguars way possible, but they got it done.
I have questions about Coen, but I can’t argue with the success he has had on offense. I had Coen in my top three options for the Jaguars. And while I was a fan of Aaron Glenn, I knew he was never a real option for the Jaguars. It was Ben Johnson or Coen. End of list. When Johnson went off the board, it was Coen or bust. I have been seeing Bucs fans suggesting the team fire head coach Todd Bowles and promote Coen for months. A wild and illogical idea, but that shows how much Bucs fans liked Coen.
I give Shad Khan a lot of credit for solving the problem. He created the problem, but he did identify it quickly. Once Khan did that, he resolved it and then got his guy. Again, they got to where they needed to, and that is all that matters.
This should inject a ton of hype right into the Jaguars fanbase. Think about this: Baalke and Doug Pederson are gone, and the Jaguars hired a new offensive-minded head coach who was one of the top available coaches this offseason. Just forget about how they got to this point because the journey didn’t matter. They ended right where they needed to be.
