Local designer tailors style for NFL, college athletes

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Arminius Patterson, the creative force behind Audacious by Arminius, is making waves in the NFL fashion scene. Known for his bespoke designs, Patterson collaborates with players like Jaguars safety Antonio Johnson to craft outfits that tell a personal story.

“All the guys they trust our vision, but we also ask them what story do you want to tell within your outfit in a sense,” Patterson said. “They kind of align with who they are as players.”

Pregame fashion has become a staple in the NFL, with players using their attire to express individuality.

“I feel like this is like another way for us to really express ourselves and show our personalities,” Johnson said.

Patterson, a Jacksonville native and Jaguars fan, has always dreamed of styling NFL players. His studio, located in downtown Jacksonville, has become a hub for custom designs.

“We’re located in the heart of downtown,” Patterson said. “I’ve been a Jags fan. I’m from Jacksonville so we just thought ‘why not?’”

In addition to Johnson, Patterson styles other Jaguars players, including Mac Jones and Montaric Brown. His designs have become so popular that players like Jones are gifting them as presents.

“Mac came up with the idea,” Patterson said. “He said ‘hey man, I want to do some Christmas gifts for my O-linemen. They may not look as good as me, but they protect me well so I want to give them something. He gifted the whole offense, 15, he gifted them custom suits for the holidays.”

Audacious by Arminius started in 2015 as a custom bow tie company and has since evolved into a bespoke suit business. Patterson emphasizes the importance of unique patterns and textures, saying, “We need some different things out here, some different patterns, some textures that companies were not offering.”

The process of creating these custom suits is hands-on and efficient.

“We have some of the quickest turnaround time because we take a hands-on approach within the United States,” Patterson said.

Clients can choose from over 1,000 different fabrics, tailored to their playing climate.

Patterson’s passion for fashion began in childhood, though he initially aspired to be an NFL player.

“When I was a kid I wanted to be an NFL player, but I’ve always loved fashion,” he shares.

Beyond the Jaguars, Patterson works with athletes nationwide, including Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson, Gators quarterback DJ Lagway, and Longhorns wide receiver Isaiah Bond. His designs extend beyond game day, with wedding suits like the one for Jaguars tight end Evan Engram, featured in Vogue magazine.

“Vogue is the highest of the high,” Patterson said. “So, Vogue was nothing but God.”

Patterson’s creations are more than just suits; they are works of art, crafted to tell a unique story.
