A deepwater fish new to science has been named after San, the warrior princess from Studio Ghibli’s landmark animated movie Princess Mononoke, attributable to its hanging facial markings.
The brand new species, Branchiostegus sanae, was recognized by Chinese language researchers after they observed its distinctive cheek stripes.
San, a princess raised by wolves, was the war-painted protagonist of Hayao Miyazaki’s 1997 animated movie.
Princess Mononoke was a sensation in Japan and grossed over 19 billion yen (£100.4m) on the field workplace.

The newly found fish is a deepwater tilefish, belonging to the household Branchiostegidae.
As their title suggests, deepwater tilefish are discovered at excessive depths, with some species being discovered as deep as 600m under the floor.
Researchers from the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology, the Chinese language Academy of Science, Zhejiang College and Ocean College of China, used genetic evaluation to substantiate it as a brand new species.
Impressed by its resemblance to San, they selected “sanae” for the precise title as a tribute.
Lead creator of the research Haochen Huang mentioned: “In Princess Mononoke, San is a younger girl raised by wolves after being deserted by her human dad and mom. She sees herself as part of the forest and fights to guard it.
“The movie delves into the complicated relationship between people and nature, selling a message of harmonious coexistence between the 2: one thing we hope to echo by means of this naming.”
Deepwater tilefish are generally present in seafood markets throughout east and southeast Asia.
Nonetheless their variety stays comparatively low, with solely 31 described species within the Branchiostegidae household and 19 within the Branchiostegus genus.
