For all you pollinator gardeners out there, check out all the blooms still supporting the critters you love in November! They’re in the Pollinator Garden on the College Park campus of the University of Maryland, (Zone 7B), where we still haven’t had a killing freeze. So maybe in a normal year (though really, what’s normal anymore?) most of these would stop blooming by late October. (The designer and gardener-in-charge, Sam Bahr, tells me that only the Verbesina virginica regularly blooms this late.) And thanks to Sam for identifying all the plants.
Lucky for me, I pass by this garden every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on my way to classes – two about American history and one about woody plants that I’ll be reporting on here.
Above, the bloomingest of them all is ‘Ryan’s Pink’ Hardy Mum.
Lantana Samara ‘ Chapel Hill Gold’; Vernonia baldwinii; and Lantana camara ‘Citrus Salad’.
Boltonia asteroides; Verbesina virginica; Euphorbia corollata; unknown Symphyotrichum species.
Helianthus salicifolius hybrid.
Buddleja ‘Grand Cascade’.
Part of a whole hedge of Abelia x grandiflora ‘Rose Creek’.
Just around the corner is a large stand of Salvia leucantha ‘Midnight’ on Tawes Plaza. (Shown in this Rant post.)
