Four to watch

Bartram Trail (3-3) at (2) Nease (5-0), Monday, 7 p.m.

The Bears have owned this series as of late. They’ve won the last 12 games in this series, although the teams haven’t played since 2020. Nease won its first game against Bartram in 2005, a 7-6 slugfest where starting QB Tim Tebow had to sit out due to an ankle injury. Nease finds itself in the spot typically reserved for the Bears. It has a claim as the area’s best team this year and has validated that with wins over the likes of Buchholz, Creekside, Fletcher, Ponte Vedra and St. Augustine. QB Nate Harry has been very good for the Panthers (1,005 passing yards, 12 TDs). RB KJ Perry (292 rushing yards, 5 TDs) and WR Maddox Spencer (427 receiving yards, 5 TDs) are the other big offensive pieces. The bigger surprise is the ferocity of the Nease defense. LB Joe Miracle III has been a machine (4 tackles, 10 TFL, 5.5 sacks, 2 INTs) for Nease. DBs Elisha Luckett and Shemar McNair have combined for four interceptions, with both essentially tipping recent games in favor of Nease with picks. Bartram is in a bit of transition. RB Arthur Lewis IV is a big play waiting to happen (1,117 rushing yards, 11 TDs). He’s a nightmare both on offense and special teams. QB Jaden Weatherly has accounted for 13 TDs (10 passing, 3 rushing). WR Deandre Caldwell (570 receiving yards, 3 TDs) is a playmaker. They’ve just had some issues on defense, allowing 30.7 points per game. They’ve seen county teams Creekside and Tocoi Creek rack up 95 combined points in losses to those programs.

(9) Beachside (5-1) at Fleming Island (3-3), Monday, 6 p.m.

The Barracudas are rolling. They’re a combined 14-2 since the start of the 2023 season and clipped rival Tocoi Creek for the first time in Week 7. The competition continues to climb in Week 8 and a district game against the Golden Eagles. Beachside is averaging 37.5 points per game but that number has been down in two of its more difficult games against Ponte Vedra and Tocoi Creek. A pass-first offense, the Barracudas actually found quite a bit of success on the ground against the Toros. QB Eddie Jordan (1,534 passing yards, 13 TDs) has thrown eight of his TDs to WR Drew Watson (607 receiving yards). RBs Jake House and Marco Lanza both took turns finding success on the ground last week. Fleming is another step up in opposition. The Golden Eagles have two excruciatingly tough losses (17-14 to Oakleaf, 48-45 to Creekside), but they’re still very dangerous. QB Cibastian Broughton (914 passing yards, 9 TDs; 375 rushing yards, 5 TDs), WR Trace Burney (595 receiving yards, 9 TDs) and RB Demhir Jackson (473 rushing yards, 4 TDs) give Fleming a powerful offensive trio.

Fernandina Beach (4-3) at Yulee (1-5), Game of the Week

The Hornets have controlled this series. They’ve won 10 straight and 14 of 17 all-time meetings. Yulee is better than its record. They’ve lost a pair of one-point games (Union County, West Nassau) to teams who are a combined 13-1. The Hornets also have a 23-20 loss to Clay. They’ve only been truly handled one time, a 42-14 blowout to Charlton County. The Pirates are coming off a tough county loss to West Nassau.

Middleburg (6-0) at (8) Ponte Vedra (4-2), Monday, 6 p.m.

A District 3-5A clash. The Sharks would have a difficult path to the district title with a loss here. They’re already a game back of Fleming Island in 3-5A. The Broncos are out to their best start since 1989, including a 24-14 win over Clay County rival Orange Park in their last game out. They’ve given up just 20 points all season, a remarkably low number and the lowest allowed in the area. But that is deceptive. Middleburg’s path to 6-0 has been filled with easier opponents. The Broncos’ schedule strength is the fourth-worst in Region 1-5A. But that changes considerably on the back side of the schedule, with a closing stretch of the Sharks, Beachside, Fleming Island and North Marion. QB Carson Stewart (723 passing yards, 8 TDs) is the big name for the Broncos. Half of his TD passes have gone to WR Deshun Green (319 yards, 4 TDs). But it’s the defense that has been the headliner for Middleburg. DL BJ Carter (20 tackles, 3 TFL, 3 sacks) and LB Kadin Hanifen (57 tackles, TFL) lead the first two levels. In the secondary, Joel Lowe and Dusty Silmon have combined for four of Middleburg’s four picks. The Sharks are tough. They’ve got a strong defense at all three levels. On the line, Martin Geary (5 sacks) and Ryker Kemp (8 sacks) are excellent at getting to the QB. DB Fionn Day has a couple picks. LB Talan Babin leads the team in tackles (37). RB Brian Case (678 rushing yards, 8 TDs) and WR Cam Tietze (288 receiving yards, 3 TDs) are the weapons for QB Drew Price.

Next two to watch

(3) Bradford (6-0) at Newberry (4-2), 7:30 p.m.: Panthers RB Kaleb Woods (768 rushing yards, 9 TDs) will try and be the first player to solve the Tornadoes this season. Bradford has allowed 41 points all season, with versatile two-way star Jeremiah McKenzie leading the way. This is a tough, tough district test for Bradford.

Christ’s Church (6-0) at Providence (5-1), Saturday, 3:30 p.m.: Stallions QB Mason Williams (1,305 passing yards, 14 TDs; 10 rushing TDs, 459 rushing yards) has been one of the area’s best. For the unbeaten Eagles, the competition up until this point has been lean. This is their most difficult matchup of the season. RB Kyree Wilson (867 yards, 9 TDs) is closing in on a 1,000-yard rushing season for the Eagles.
