Walker Buehler makes pitch for Alex Bregman to join Red Sox

It appears one star really wants Alex Bregman on a new team.

Recent Red Sox signing Walker Buehler told reporters on a video call on Friday that he has pitched the free agent third baseman on the idea of joining him in Boston.

“I have certainly made a pitch all over the place for him to come to Boston,” Buehler said. “He and I have been buddies for a long time. We played on Team USA together a little bit in college.”

Buehler continued by mentioning that the two have bonded over the horse racing industry, revealing that they even own a horse together, a 3-year-old colt named March of Time.

“I got involved in this horse and there was more of the horse that could have been purchased, so, he was the one guy I called and he opted in,” Buehler said, “The horse won in Santa Anita in its first time with us.”

The Red Sox and Buehler agreed to a one-year deal worth $21.05 million last week, which also includes $2.5 million in performance incentives.

Buehler’s signing is part of a Red Sox pitching rotation makeover, with the club trading for former White Sox ace Garrett Crochet on Dec. 11.

However, Boston is still in search of a power bat, losing out on Juan Soto to the Mets in December and seeing Tyler O’Neill leave the Red Sox for the rival Orioles.

Bregman, who hit .260 with 26 home runs last year for the Astros, could be a valuable right-handed bat in a lefty-heavy Red Sox lineup.

According to The Post’s Jon Heyman, the Red Sox landing Bregman would be an “outside possibility.”

During a Bleacher Report livestream this week, Heyman noted that the Tigers and Blue Jays are likely the top two contenders to land Bregman, with both teams looking for a third baseman.

He reported in November that the Red Sox would likely have to move Rafael Devers to first base if they signed Bregman.

Bregman was originally drafted by the Red Sox in the 29th round of the 2012 draft, but he opted to play at LSU instead before going to the Astros at No. 2 overall in 2015.
