Why Mets deserve time to complete Juan Soto-led makeover

At this time last year, the Mets had yet to sign Sean Manaea. They had yet to add JD Martinez and Harrison Bader. They had just traded for Tyrone Taylor and Adrian Houser.

In other words, president of baseball operations David Stearns hadn’t done much of significance up to this point in 2023. There were moves still to be made, which remains the case for Stearns and the Mets this offseason.

This is a message to impatient and antsy Mets fans. A reminder that Stearns is biding his time, waiting for the right moment to strike. Outside of the blockbuster 15-year, $765 million signing of Juan Soto, it has so far been a relatively quiet offseason in Queens. They made two under-the-radar pitching moves, inking Clay Holmes and Frankie Montas and then early this morning re-signed Manaea to a three-year, $75 million deal. But they have yet to bring in a corner infielder or add much to the bullpen (Holmes is expected to transition to being a starting pitcher).

Mets fans have wanted to see more action. They feel the lineup and pitching staff is short. They are right. But they are wrong for not letting it play out.
