American sprinter and Olympic medal winner Fred Kerley was arrested Thursday night in Miami after approaching the site of an active investigation and impeding officers’ efforts, News 7 Miami reports.
Kerley, 29, encountered officers who were on the 100 block of 9th Street and expressed concern about his car, which was parked nearby.
The Olympian was asked by officers to vacate the scene but refused. According to reports, he became aggressive and assumed a fighting stance.
Backup units were called in to assist in de-escalating the situation and a taser was used to subdue Kerley.
Officers’ body cam footage obtained by Fox 7 News showed the scene unfolding.
At the Miami Beach precinct, he was charged with battery on a police officer, corrections officer, or firefighter, resisting an officer without violence and disorderly conduct.
It’s unclear whether Kerley had any relation to the investigation police were in the midst of conducting when he arrived at the scene.
Kerley, a native Texan, has appeared in two Olympic Games for Team USA.
At the 2020 games in Tokyo, he took home the silver medal in the 100-meter competition. His second Olympic appearance came at the Paris 2024 games, where he earned a bronze medal in the 100-meter race.
In addition to his Olympic appearances, Kerley has also competed at a number of World Championship Games. At the 2017 games in London, he earned a silver medal as a member of team USA in the 4×400-meter relay. Two years later, at the 2019 World Championship in Doha, he earned gold in the same event and bronze in the 400-meter final.
In 2022, at the championship in Eugene, he ran the 100-meter sprint in 9.86 seconds to capture the gold medal. He won another gold medal the following year at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest as a member of the 4×100-meter relay team.
He is the cousin of former Jets wide receiver Jeremy Kerley.
